Die Ehefrau des Malers Hayashi ist vor kurzem gestorben. Seitdem zieht er sich manchmal in die Kanalisation zurück und trauert seinem alten Leben, insbesondere seiner Kindheit hinterher. Eines Tages findet er dort unten eine Meerjungfrau, die am Bauch eine Art Entzündung oder ein Geschwür hat. Er nimmt sie mit in seine Wohnung und pflegt sie in seiner Badewanne, doch die Geschwüre breiten sich immer weiter auf ihrem Körper aus. Auch das Aufschneiden der Blasen und das Ablassen der merkwürdigen Flüssigkeiten darin bringt keine Besserung (der Maler nutzt diese Flüssigkeiten zum Malen), bald machen sich Würmer auf ihr breit und der Maler, der sie wie unter Zwang immer wieder malen muß, kommt langsam dem Wahnsinn nahe...
